I trust that everyone is looking forward to the Easter long weekend; I know I am. Although us business owners should take advantage of getting some well-deserved rest over the long weekend while all of our clients are on holidays, this period is also a great opportunity to catch up on those tasks that we have been putting aside because we are "too busy". Usually these tasks are important ones, but may seem unimportant amongst many other conflicting priorities. Here are my top 5 tips on how to make the most of the long weekend and top 10 tips on organising your office space. I hope they are useful to you and your business!
Do your filing! If you work from home do it on the weekend or if you work in an office, spend some time on Thursday afternoon getting your space organised for your return after Easter. And I don't just mean to file things away, but first sort through the paperwork you already have in your filing system. Shred those documents that you no longer need. Archive those documents that you may need to access in the future. If you haven't set up an archive system do it now! If you start early, it won't become too much of a burden further down the track.
Take some time to set up 'rules' in your email account to help you categorise and prioritise your work. Sending your personal emails from selected email addresses straight to a 'personal' email folder instead of to your inbox will limit distractions and ensure a productive working day.
Ask some trusted colleagues and friends to look at your current marketing materials (including your website) and ask for their opinions on how they could be improved. Offer them a reward for their feedback. Then you can spend some time working with a copywriter or a marketing strategist to update your marketing collateral.
Back up all of your files on your computer! And then schedule this in to be a weekly task, before it is TOO LATE! You don't want to be telling people about how you wish you had backed up your files when you had the chance...
Lastly, now that your processes and procedures are more organised, take some time to re-energise your SELF. Do a coastal or bush walk. Take your kids to the local pool. Invite some close friends around for a BBQ and wind down over some casual conversation. Hire a kayak and go exploring! Whatever you need to do to get back to 'you', DO IT! You'll be a much more productive and centred person when it comes time to start all over again after your break.
